Philosophy Program
Lydia Barry, Ph.D. - Program Director
Vision
The Philosophy Program engages students to understand and articulate their own positions and engage in critical yet receptive inquiry with others and the world around them.
Mission
The faculty of the Philosophy Program will introduce students to philosophy as a way of life through critical self-inquiry, ethical reasoning, metaphysical and epistemological speculation, aesthetic reflection, and logical rigor.
Curriculum
The Philosophy program supports Gannon University’s mission and commitment to Catholic higher education. As a defining aspect of the intellectual life and student experience at Gannon, the Philosophy program affords students a learning experience directed toward critical investigation and receptive inquiry. As an essential part of the Gannon student experience, the Philosophy Program provides courses integral to the Liberal Core. Each student first takes course, Philosophy and the Good Life. This course exposes students to philosophical inquiry and critically investigates ethical possibilities for living a good life. The second Philosophy course in the Liberal Studies Core sequence is an integrative Philosophy course in which students can choose from various PHIL course offerings.
The Philosophy program offers a minor in Philosophy, a minor in Health Care Ethics, and a major in Philosophy. The major in Philosophy has four tracks: Health Care Ethics, General Philosophy, Science and Philosophy, and College Seminar Studies. The minor in Philosophy consists of 15 credits. The minor in Health Care Ethics consists of 18 credits. The Philosophy Major consists of 30 credits. The majors and minors in the Philosophy program allow students to explore their unique Philosophical interests. Both the Philosophy major and the minors are designed to supplement a student’s primary area of study and prepare them for life and career.
